Is the Annapurna Base Camp Trek the right kind of trip for me? Good to know before you decide

There are 10 days of strenuous trekking on this trip. You’ll be trekking 5-7 hours each day and at altitudes well over the 4000 metres mark sometimes. So always take altitude sickness into account for your safety.

It’s very important if you have an average fitness and health levels the trip will be the best one for you at all times. While on trek the trekking lodges, known as teahouses, have only basic facilities. Hot water may not always be available and may cost extra, so as the access to electricity points for charging devices. You may get Wi-Fi facilities at some locations, but network connections and signal might be weaker.

As the trek is set outdoors this makes it unpredictable and uncertain. In case of high risk weather conditions the trip is likely to run on an amended itinerary.

Is the Annapurna Base Camp trek safe?

Which is the best season to visit the Annapurna Base Camp Trekking region?

The Annapurna Base Camp Trek is an all season trekking circuit that sees adventures throughout the year. Looking for quaint and less frequented paths than summer or monsoon season is the best. In the summer/monsoon (June, July, and August), the temperature ranges between 19°C/66.2°F to 4°C/39.2°F which results in strong haze from the sun and heavy rainfall.

Ideally the best and the popular season is the autumn (fall) or spring to be at the Annapurna region. The average temperature ranges between 12-21 degrees Celsius. The days are generally long and warm while the nights are comparatively cooler. It is one of the best times to witness the green cultivable fields, and the flora and fauna on the trails.

The winter months of December to February, the weather is extremely cold and unbearable. The temperature ranges between 9.3°C/48.74°F to -20°C/-4°F. It poses posing all kinds of difficulty for trekking. This is the time which is overlooked by novice trekkers.

What kind of accommodation will i get during the trek?

You will get a three star accommodation in Kathmandu and in Pokhara. During the trekking days the accommodation will be very simple and basic based on a twin sharing basis. You will be flying to the Tribuwan International Airport at Kathmandu. Upon arrival you will be welcomed and received by one of our representatives and transfer to hotel. The day is meant for rest and relaxation in the afternoon. In the evening you will be introduced to the guide and other group members for a quick brief about the trek ahead. Overnight at a hotel in Kathmandu.

Today the day is meant for amazing sightseeing and exploration day in and around the city of Kathmandu. After an early morning's breakfast a look at the culturally vibrant and architecturally rich heritages is inevitable. A place such as the Pashupatinath is a holy temple for the Hindu followers worldwide. 

Next we visit the Boudhnath and Swaymbhunath stupas which are a pilgrim site for the Buddhist followers. After that we then visit the Kathmandu Durbar Square which is a plethora of Nepalese art and architecture to be basked under. Finally we will pay homage to the Kumari Ghar, known to be the residence of the living Virgin Goddess. Later in the evening we will be returning back to our hotel for a welcome dinner and sharing of lighter moments and ideas. Overnight at Hotel in Kathmandu.

    An early morning rise is on the cards. We quickly have our breakfast and board the vehicle for the onward journey towards the picturesque city of Pokahara. It is a good 5-6 hours of scenic drive that is fascinating and splendid.  

    We pass through various landscapes adorned with terraced farms, high mountainous backdrops, and interesting villages. On the way we get to observe the famous Trishuli River known for rafting having its origin in Tibet. After a long drive we unwind ourselves and arrive at Pokahara in the afternoon. Overnight at Pokhara 
     

      A drive to Nayapul from Pokhara and from there we take a path that takes us downhill following a river that culminates at Birethanti. It is one of the high altitude villages that sit at the height of 1,025m. It is one of the idyllic villages situated at the confluence of the Modi and Bhurungdi Khola (streams Modi River.

      We continue walking across the suspension metal bridge and steep ascent on stone staircases and reach a large Magar Village named Ulleri. From here we get an amazing view of Annapurna South and Hiunchuli. All in all, we will walk for 5 hours. Overnight at a lodge
       

        We are in for a pleasant days trekking this morning. After breakfast we follow the path that takes us through to the rhododendron and oak forests. The views and the scenic nature add energy and refresh us giving us the inspiration to continue and feel the impressive vibes of the surrounding. 

        After a few hours and with several breaks we reach Ghorepani. Here we will be greeted by astonishing views of the fascinating Dhaulagiri and the Annapurna Himalayan range. Overnight at a lodge.

          An exciting early morning awakens us with a pre-dawn visit in mind. A 45-minute walk up to Poon hill (3,210m/10,530ft) is memorable. From this very place we will get the first extraordinary glimpse of the first rays of the sun striking the mountains. Basking under the best sunrise view from the grassy top of the hill, there is an unobstructed panoramic view in store for us.

          The fantastic views of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna Range Machhapuchhare (Fish Tail) and Manaslu is a rewarding encounter. After lensing vibrant photographs, we pass through Deurali Ban Thanti towards Thulo Odar Kharka through rhododendron forests. From here, a steep descent and a short climb will finally take us to Tadapani. The night will be spent at a lodge in Tadapani.
           

            Today the trail turns north to Chiule before dropping to cross the Kimrong Khola on a suspension bridge. It is from here that a gradual climb is there to be undertaken that leads us to the forested Modi Khola Valley. This valley carries glacial melting waters from the Annapurna Sanctuary.  

            After crossing the suspension bridge over Kimrong River, walk a few miles up and downhill passing Taulung to reach Chhomrong. This beautiful village belongs to the Gurung community lapped under the giant Annapurna massif. 

            Leaving this beautiful village we descend following the stone steps trail, cross the bridge across Chhomrong River and finally climb up to Sinuwa.  The night will be spent at a lodge in Sinuwa.

              We leave Sinuwa and follow the path that is destined for Deurali today. The inital walk is easy and stays gradual paced until we reach Bamboo passing Kuldhigar. From here a long steep stone staircase poses a bit of challenge taking us to Dobhan crossing a suspension bridge. 
              The trail is accompanied by Bamboo, Rhododendron and Oak forest. Then a steep climb continues through the valley towards Himalaya and Hinku cave and finally we reach Deurali. We retire for the night here at a lodge in Deurali.
               

                The 9th day of your 15 Days Annapurna Base Camp Trekking trail brings lots of excitement and thrill. Today’s trek adds meaning and justifies your efforts and will as we will get to meet the Annapurna Base Camp. First up a gentle climb through the trail along the Modi Khola reaches us to Bagar. 

                From Bagar a strenuous hike leads us to the base camp of Machhapuchhre (3,700m). We take an ideal rest for about an hour here. We quickly click memorable pictures and behold glimpses of Machhapuchhre and other snow-capped towering peaks that are above 7000 and 8000 meter. 

                We then follow a wide trail that leads us to Annapurna Sanctuary. We then finally reach our destination, the South Annapurna Base Camp that greets us with 360 degree vista of snow covered peaks. The night will be spent at a lodge in Annapurna Base Camp.

                  The entire trek to the Annapurna Base camp is proved meaningful right here at this very destination. A pre-dawn wake-up call is promising as we will be getting beautiful sunrise views over the Annapurna I Machhapuchhre, and Annapurna South. We get an opportunity to click pictures from the rim of the glacier.

                  A circle of mind blowing peaks from Hiunchuli, past Annapurna South Annapurna I,III and Machhapuchhare is sizzling.  Below, in its U-shaped valley, the glacier grinds relentlessly. After breakfast, we retrace back down to Bamboo. Overnight at a lodge in Bamboo.

                    Today’s trail is set to regain height as it rises to Kuldi and attractive Sinuwa.  Then it drops to cross the Chhomrong Khola and the neat steps that return you to Chhomrong. 

                    From there it is but a short, steep drop to the compact village of Jhinu Danda. Enjoy a relaxing afternoon to give your tiring muscles a bit of calming effect at the hot spring at the river below the village. Overnight at a lodge in Jhinu Danda.

                      From Jhinu Danda the trail wonders through the through scattered trees and bushes to the village of Tolka. Beyond that we have to make a steep ascent of good two hours until we hit the forest of Deurali. 

                      This bustling hilltop village looks back towards the high peaks with an extended view of the Annapurnas from Dhaulagiri (8,167m/26,796ft: It also offers scintillating views over the Pokhara Valley and Phewa Lake to the south. The trail then descends through forests and farmland to the quieter welcoming village of Pothana. Overnight at Pothana.

                        This is perhaps the last day of your trek up into the mountains. It begins with a short day’s trek which is probably downhill taking you through to an attractive open farmland. An hour’s walk, with good views back over the Annapurna’s, leads to a slight ridge and then the large village of Dhampus. 

                        The trail then descends along a dirt road through scattered hamlets and paddy fields to Phedi – and the Pokhara – Baglung Highway. A short drive will return you to your hotel in Pokhara. Rest of day is all yours. Overnight at Pokhara.

                            The 15th Day of your Annapurna Base Camp Trek is the final day in Nepal. Our staff will escort you to the Tribhuwan International Airport safely. You will depart from Nepal with breath taking memories and remarkable time spent in the Annapurna Himalayan region.
